Pet Travel Essentials

Traveling with a dog or cat can be very stressful for both the pet and its owner. Keep in mind that there are a number of different needs that dogs have, which humans do not. Here are some pet travel essentials that you should know about before taking a long car ride, or even a short car ride, with your dog or cat.

1. A water bottle and a small bowl to put the water in. You never know when your pet may get thirsty. It is especially important to remember these items during the months of summer, when the temperatures are hotter and your pet is more likely to experience heat stress. Keep in mind that you should bring water during any time of the year, however.

2. Food for your pet. Dogs and cats will probably get hungry if you are going to be gone for a long period of time.

3. A leash to walk your dog or cat with. If you are going to be traveling a far distance, your pet is likely to need a rest stop. It is a good idea to make sure that you stop at least once every two to three hours or even more, depending on your pet.

4. Treats are always good to bring along, especially if your pet tends to get nervous. He or she may need reassurance about being a good boy or girl during the car ride, and as you probably already know, a treat is one of the best ways to your pet’s heart.

5. A collar with ID tags. You don’t want your dog to get separated from you without some type of identification. Of course, your pet should remain on a leash at all times when outside of the car.

6. A car seat for your pet is very important. It will help ensure that your dog remains comfortable at all times, and will prevent your dog from getting in the front of the car and blocking your view of the road. Remember that you will need a harness to strap your dog in with.

These are just a few of the pet travel essentials that you will want to bring with you when going on a car ride with your cat or dog. Remember that pet safety is a very important thing to keep in mind when traveling in the car with your dog or cat. You will want to make sure that your dog feels comfortable and healthy at all times. If anything goes wrong while you are away from home, don’t be afraid to look up numbers for emergency animal hospitals.
